House M.D. was partly inspired by which literary detective?
Answer
Sherlock Holmes
Answer
Sherlock Holmes
House M.D. was partly inspired by the literary detective Sherlock Holmes.
Gregory House shares several traits with Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Both characters are exceptionally observant, rely on deduction, and approach problems through unusual clues that others overlook. House’s surname also resembles Holmes’s, and James Wilson functions in part as a counterpart to Holmes’s friend and narrator, Dr. John Watson.
The parallel is not a literal adaptation of one Holmes story. Instead, House transfers the detective structure into medicine: symptoms become clues, diseases become mysteries, and diagnostic tests serve as investigative tools. House’s apartment number, 221B, is another deliberate reference to the London address associated with Holmes.
House also shares Holmes’s emotional reserve, musical ability, and tendency toward self-destructive behavior. These similarities explain why the character is often described as a medical version of the detective. Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, and Sam Spade are important detectives from other literary traditions, but Sherlock Holmes is the specific inspiration linked to House.
