Gujarat, Manipur, Assam, and Punjab are states in India. They are located in different parts of the country, illustrating India’s enormous geographic and cultural range.
Gujarat lies on India’s western coast and is known for the Rann of Kutch, Gujarati culture, and major cities such as Ahmedabad. Punjab is in the northwest and shares an international border with Pakistan; its name is commonly interpreted as “land of five rivers.” Assam occupies much of the Brahmaputra Valley in the northeast, while Manipur lies farther east in the hills near India’s international border with Myanmar.
These states are not neighboring regions. Gujarat and Punjab are separated by much of northern and western India, while Assam and Manipur are part of the country’s northeastern group of states. Their languages, landscapes, cuisines, and histories are notably distinct.
A common confusion is treating Punjab as a country. Punjab is a state in India, although the wider historic Punjab region was divided between India and Pakistan during the 1947 Partition. India currently has 28 states and 8 union territories.
