Groups of the Kung San people live in which African desert?

Groups of the Kung San people live in the Kalahari Desert of southern Africa. The San are Indigenous peoples whose communities have traditionally occupied parts of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

“San” is a broad collective term covering several related peoples and languages. The ǃKung, sometimes written !Kung or ǃXun, are one San group associated especially with the western Kalahari and areas of northern Namibia and southern Angola.

The Kalahari is often pictured as a completely barren desert, but much of it is better described as a semi-arid sandy savanna. Seasonal rainfall supports grasses, shrubs and wildlife, and some regions include pans, dry riverbeds and wetlands. This environment shaped traditional hunting-and-gathering practices.

Historically, many San communities relied on detailed knowledge of plants, animals and underground water sources. Their societies are diverse today, and many San people live in settled villages or alongside pastoral and farming communities rather than following exclusively nomadic lifestyles.
