Google's 2014 Maps Pokémon Challenge later inspired which 2016 mobile game?

The story behind the answer

Google's 2014 Maps Pokémon Challenge later inspired the 2016 mobile game Pokémon Go. The April Fools' project placed Pokémon around Google Maps and invited users to search for and collect them, turning a map interface into a playful augmented-reality hunt.

The idea attracted the attention of Tsunekazu Ishihara of The Pokémon Company, who was already familiar with Niantic's location-based game Ingress. That connection helped transform the joke into a commercial project. Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, and Niantic developed the game, with Niantic supplying much of the location-based technology and experience.

Pokémon Go launched in 2016 for iOS and Android. Players explored real-world locations to find Pokémon, visit PokéStops, and battle at Gyms. Many early locations were derived from crowdsourced points of interest collected through Ingress, linking the earlier game to Pokémon Go's map-based design.

The challenge was therefore more than a random Google prank: it served as a proof of concept for searching, collecting, and exploring in a mapped real world. Pokémon Quest and Pikmin Bloom are separate games, while Ingress Prime is a later title in Niantic's own series.
