Gilles at the Carnival of Binche wear costumes in which Belgian flag colors?
Answer
red, black and yellow
Answer
red, black and yellow
Gilles at the Carnival of Binche wear costumes in Belgium's flag colors: red, black and yellow.
The Gilles are the principal traditional performers of Binche Carnival in Hainaut, Belgium. Their distinctive linen suits carry red, yellow and black heraldic patterns, visually echoing the colors of the Belgian national flag. The suits are also stuffed with straw, which gives the performers their characteristic rounded, slightly hunched silhouette.
The color scheme is only one part of the costume. Gilles wear wooden clogs, belts with bells, white lace cuffs and collars, and a morning wax mask. Later, many appear in large hats decorated with ostrich feathers. Their costumes therefore combine national symbolism with local carnival tradition.
The colors are sometimes confused with other festive palettes because Binche includes many costumed groups and visiting performers. However, the canonical Gille outfit is specifically associated with Belgium's red, yellow and black. The Carnival of Binche has medieval roots, with written records dating to 1394, and UNESCO recognized it as intangible cultural heritage in 2003.
