George Washington served as the first what under the United States Constitution?

The story behind the answer

George Washington served as the first U.S. president under the United States Constitution.

Washington took the presidential oath on April 30, 1789, in New York City. The Electoral College unanimously elected him, making him the only U.S. president to receive every electoral vote in an election. John Adams became vice president.

Washington served two terms, from 1789 to 1797. His administration established important precedents, including the creation of executive departments and the practice of addressing the president with a formal title. He also supported a national financial program developed by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton.

Washington had previously commanded the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and presided over the 1787 Constitutional Convention. His decision to retire after two terms influenced the later tradition, eventually written into the Twenty-Second Amendment in 1951.
