From which part of Izanagi's body did Amaterasu emerge?

Amaterasu emerged from Izanagi’s left eye.

In the Kojiki, Izanagi purified himself by bathing after returning from Yomi, the land of the dead. As he washed different parts of his body, new kami came into existence. Amaterasu, the sun goddess, appeared when he washed his left eye.

The same purification episode explains the origins of her important siblings. Tsukuyomi, the moon deity, came from Izanagi’s right eye, while Susanoo, the storm and sea deity, came from his nose. These three are known as the Three Precious Children.

The Nihon Shoki preserves several variant birth accounts, including one in which Amaterasu is associated with a bronze mirror held in Izanagi’s left hand. Nevertheless, the left-eye episode is the standard Kojiki version and the canonical answer to this quiz question. Izanagi later assigned Amaterasu to rule Takamagahara, the Plain of High Heaven.
