From what part of Ouranos's body did Aphrodite arise?

Aphrodite arose from the severed genitals of Ouranos, or Uranus, after they were cast into the sea.

This is the striking birth story told by Hesiod in the Theogony. Gaia urged her son Cronus to attack Ouranos, the sky god, because Ouranos was imprisoning their children. Cronus severed Ouranos’s genitals and threw them into the sea. As the severed flesh moved through the water, sea foam formed around it, and Aphrodite emerged from that foam.

The story explains the goddess’s name: Aphrodite is traditionally connected with aphros, the Greek word for “foam.” It also links her to the sea and helps explain later epithets and worship sites associated with Cyprus and Cythera.

Greek mythology preserves another important version. In Homer’s Iliad, Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus and Dione rather than a sea-born child. These accounts are not always reconciled, so a careful answer should specify that “severed genitals” belongs to Hesiod’s Theogony, while the Homeric genealogy gives her a different parentage.
