Charles Elmer Doolin
Answer
Charles Elmer Doolin
Fritos were developed into a brand by Charles Elmer Doolin, founder of the Frito Corporation.
In 1932, Doolin encountered fried corn chips at a San Antonio restaurant and learned that Gustavo Olguin, a Mexican immigrant from Oaxaca, was selling a recipe, equipment, and customer accounts. Doolin bought the small business venture for $100, then began producing the chips with his family in his mother’s kitchen. The company was formally organized as the Frito Corporation in September 1932.
The name Frito comes from the Spanish word for fried. Early production used an adapted potato ricer to extrude corn dough into strips, which were cut and dropped into hot oil. Doolin and his family later developed machinery and expanded production beyond their original garage operation.
Olguin deserves credit for the original recipe and business Doolin purchased, but Doolin created the branded company and built Fritos into a major commercial product. In 1961, the Frito Corporation merged with H. W. Lay & Company to form Frito-Lay, which later became part of PepsiCo.
