Frida Kahlo was married to which famous muralist?
Answer
Diego Rivera
Answer
Diego Rivera
Frida Kahlo was married to the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. They first met briefly in 1922, when Rivera was painting a mural at Kahlo’s school, but their relationship developed several years later after Kahlo showed Rivera her paintings.
They married in a civil ceremony in Coyoacán on August 21, 1929. Kahlo was 22 and Rivera was 42, and their dramatic difference in age, size, and temperament inspired the description of their relationship as “the elephant and the dove.” Both were major Mexican artists, but Rivera was already internationally celebrated for large public murals.
Their marriage was turbulent, marked by infidelities and separation. They divorced in 1939, partly after Rivera’s affair with Kahlo’s younger sister Cristina, but remarried in San Francisco on December 8, 1940. Kahlo’s paintings often explored pain, identity, and Mexican culture, while Rivera became known for socially themed murals such as Detroit Industry.
