For which Academy Award was Tangled nominated?

The story behind the answer

Tangled was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The nomination recognized “I See the Light,” a song written by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater. In the film, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider sing it during the lantern festival, creating the story’s central romantic and visual musical moment. The song was performed by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, who voiced Rapunzel and Flynn.

Tangled competed at the 83rd Academy Awards, honoring films released in 2010. Although the movie received other major award nominations, including recognition for animated feature categories from critics’ and industry groups, it was not nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The Academy’s Tangled nomination was specifically for its song.

The award went instead to “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3, written by Randy Newman. That result can create a mix-up because Newman also wrote songs for another Disney animated film, The Princess and the Frog. Tangled’s Oscar recognition therefore belongs to its original song, not its score, sound, or overall animated-feature category.
