For which 1889 event was the Eiffel Tower built in Paris?
Answer
Exposition Universelle
Answer
Exposition Universelle
The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
The exposition celebrated the centenary of the French Revolution and opened on 5 May 1889. Engineer Gustave Eiffel’s company constructed the tower from more than 18,000 individual iron parts joined by millions of rivets. At about 300 metres, it was the world’s tallest man-made structure when completed, surpassing the Washington Monument.
The tower was intended to demonstrate French engineering and to serve as the entrance arch for the fair. Many artists and writers initially criticized its appearance, and the structure was originally planned to remain for only 20 years. Its usefulness for radio and telegraphy helped preserve it.
The Eiffel Tower is sometimes confused with a permanent monument designed from the beginning to last indefinitely. Its survival resulted from changing practical and cultural value, and it became one of Paris’s most recognizable landmarks.
