The 1876 Philadelphia fair celebrating the Declaration’s centennial was the Centennial Exposition.
Its formal title was the International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine. It ran in Fairmount Park from May 10 to November 10, 1876, and marked one hundred years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted in Philadelphia.
The exposition was the first official world’s fair held in the United States. Nearly ten million visitors attended, and thirty-seven countries participated. Exhibits emphasized manufacturing, science, agriculture, education, and technology, presenting the United States as an industrial and innovative nation.
The event also created a historical bridge between the founding generation and later national celebrations. America250 echoes that earlier centennial tradition, although the 2026 anniversary commemorates 250 years rather than 100. The fair’s buildings and exhibits helped make Philadelphia a lasting center of American anniversary memory.
