For America’s 250th anniversary, the Philadelphia time capsule is scheduled to be unearthed in 2276.
The capsule is planned as a message from the United States’ 250th anniversary to its 500th anniversary. It is scheduled for burial in Philadelphia on July 4, 2026, exactly 250 years before its planned opening. The date also marks the 500th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Philadelphia was selected because of its central place in the founding era. The city hosted the Second Continental Congress and was the meeting place where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted. The capsule is intended to preserve a snapshot of American life for people living two and a half centuries later.
The year 2276 can be confused with 2026, the semiquincentennial year itself, or 1776, the year of the Declaration. The planned opening date is July 4, 2276—not merely sometime during that year.
