For America250, which site marked completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869?

The story behind the answer

Promontory Summit marked completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869. On May 10, the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads met at Promontory Summit in Utah Territory, where a ceremonial golden spike joined the tracks.

The Union Pacific built westward from Omaha, while the Central Pacific built eastward from Sacramento. Congress had authorized the project through the Pacific Railway Acts, which provided federal loans and land grants. Construction crossed plains, deserts, mountains, and difficult terrain, relying heavily on immigrant labor, including thousands of Chinese workers on the Central Pacific line.

The famous ceremony created a continuous rail connection across the United States, although the railroad was not literally the first route linking the coasts by any means of travel. Telegraph lines and ships had already connected distant regions. The original Promontory route was later bypassed, and the golden spike used at the ceremony is preserved at Stanford University’s Cantor Arts Center.
