For America250 history, which 1777 campaign became a major turning point in the American Revolution?

The story behind the answer

The Saratoga campaign became a major turning point in the American Revolution in 1777.

The campaign involved British efforts to divide New England from the other American colonies. American forces stopped General John Burgoyne’s army in a series of engagements in New York, culminating in the Battles of Saratoga. Burgoyne surrendered to General Horatio Gates at Saratoga on October 17, 1777.

The American victory encouraged France to enter the war openly as an ally of the United States. French military, naval, and financial support greatly strengthened the American cause and contributed to the eventual defeat of British forces. Saratoga is sometimes confused with Yorktown, the 1781 campaign that produced the decisive British surrender of the Revolutionary War’s major fighting.
