Answer
Major Tom
The lyric “Ground control to…” is completed by “Major Tom” in David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”
Released in July 1969, the song tells the story of a fictional astronaut who loses contact with Ground Control during a space mission. Major Tom was the first of Bowie’s recurring fictional characters, and Bowie later revisited him in “Ashes to Ashes.” The character gives the song a human focus: beneath its science-fiction setting, it is also a story about isolation, emotional distance, and the uncertainty of exploration.
Bowie drew inspiration from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Apollo 8 Earthrise photograph, and personal events surrounding a breakup. The single was rush-released to coincide with the Apollo 11 Moon landing and was used by the BBC during its coverage. It initially sold modestly, but eventually became Bowie’s first major UK hit and later reached number one there after reissues.
“Major Tom” is sometimes confused with generic answers such as “astronaut” or “spaceman,” but those describe the character rather than naming him. Captain Kirk belongs to Star Trek, not Bowie’s song.
