Toto's lyric asks, “I bless the rains down in...” and the canonical answer is “Africa.” The word is also the song's title and its central setting, so alternatives such as Kenya or Nairobi are not defensible completions.
Written by David Paich and Jeff Porcaro, “Africa” was recorded for Toto IV and released as a single in 1982. Paich drew inspiration partly from memories of Catholic-school teachers who had worked as missionaries, while landscape details were influenced by National Geographic material. He had not yet visited Africa when writing it.
The song presents Africa through an imaginative, romanticized perspective rather than as a precise travel account. One often-noted geographical mismatch places Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti together even though they are roughly 420 kilometres apart. That detail reflects the song's dreamlike construction, not a literal map.
“Africa” later became a major internet-era revival, including a popular 2018 cover by Weezer. The original remains Toto's signature song, and its repeated chorus makes “Africa” the only fair quiz answer.
