Finish the lyric from 'Mr. Brightside': 'I've been doing...'

The story behind the answer

The lyric from The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” is “I’ve been doing just fine.”

“Mr. Brightside” was the Killers’ debut single and first appeared in 2003 before being re-released in 2004 on their album Hot Fuss. Guitarist Dave Keuning developed the musical idea before meeting singer Brandon Flowers, who wrote the lyrics and chorus after hearing Keuning’s early work. The song’s urgent energy contrasts sharply with its subject: jealousy, betrayal and obsessive suspicion.

Flowers has said the story came from a real experience in Las Vegas, when he discovered that his girlfriend was with another man at a bar. That personal origin helps explain why the narrator’s claim to be doing fine sounds so strained; the song quickly reveals that he is anything but calm.

The recording is unusual because it repeats the same verse. Flowers had not written a second verse, so the band used the first one again. The song eventually became the Killers’ signature hit, peaking at number 10 in both the United States and United Kingdom.
