The lyric “Would you lie with me and just forget the...” is completed by “world” in Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars.”
Released in 2006, “Chasing Cars” was written by Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody and produced for the album Eyes Open. Lightbody has said the phrase “chasing cars” came from a saying used by his father, referring to pursuing something unattainable or pointless.
The song became Snow Patrol’s biggest international hit. It was strongly associated with the television series Grey’s Anatomy after appearing in the program, which helped expose it to a large audience.
The lyrics are deliberately sparse and focus on staying still with another person rather than describing a complex story. “Forget the world” therefore expresses a temporary retreat from outside pressures, making the line both simple and emotionally broad.
