Finish the lyric from 'Bridge over Troubled Water': 'Like a bridge over troubled...'

The story behind the answer

The lyric from “Bridge over Troubled Water” is “Like a bridge over troubled water.”

Paul Simon wrote the song in 1969, and Simon & Garfunkel released it in January 1970 as the title track of their final studio album. Although Simon composed it, Art Garfunkel sings the lead vocal, giving the song its soaring, gospel-influenced character. Simon initially encouraged Garfunkel to perform it alone, even though Garfunkel was hesitant at first.

The central image is a metaphor for offering protection and support during hardship. Simon drew inspiration from gospel music, especially the Swan Silvertones’ 1959 song “Mary Don’t You Weep,” which includes a similar bridge image. He also cited Johann Sebastian Bach as an influence on parts of the melody.

The recording became one of the duo’s defining successes. It topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks in 1970 and won five Grammy Awards in 1971, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. More than 50 artists have recorded notable covers.
