El Salvador is the smallest country on the mainland of Central America, covering about 21,041 square kilometres. Despite its size, it contains a densely populated landscape of volcanoes, uplands, Pacific lowlands, and river valleys. Its highest point is Cerro El Pital, which rises to about 2,730 metres.
