Eddie Levert, lead singer of the O’Jays, is the father of singer Gerald Levert.

Gerald Levert followed his father into R&B and became a successful singer, songwriter, and producer in his own right. Born in Canton, Ohio, in 1966, Gerald grew up around the music business while Eddie was performing with the O’Jays, one of soul music’s major vocal groups.

Gerald formed the trio LeVert in 1983 with his younger brother Sean Levert and Marc Gordon. The group became known for contemporary R&B hits, while Gerald also built a solo career and later joined the supergroup LSG with Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill. His work combined modern new jack swing and soul with the vocal traditions associated with his father.

Father and son also recorded together. Their duet “Baby Hold On to Me” reached No. 1 on the U.S. R&B chart in 1992, and they later released the collaborative album Father and Son in 1995. Eddie was also the father of Sean and Eddie Levert Jr., but Gerald is the canonical answer to this singular trivia question.
