The first Earth Day took place in the United States on April 22, 1970. Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed a nationwide environmental teach-in, and organizer Denis Hayes helped turn the idea into a mass event involving schools, universities, and communities. An estimated 20 million Americans participated.

Earth Day is sometimes confused with World Environment Day, which is observed on June 5 and is a United Nations-led observance.
