During the 1929 Wall Street Crash, on which date did U.S. stocks first suffer a major panic sell-off?

The story behind the answer

During the 1929 Wall Street Crash, U.S. stocks first suffered a major panic sell-off on October 24, 1929.

The date became known as Black Thursday. Trading on the New York Stock Exchange was extremely heavy, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell sharply during the morning. A group of leading bankers later met at J.P. Morgan & Co. and bought shares to help steady prices, producing a temporary recovery.

Black Thursday was not the crash's only dramatic day. October 28, known as Black Monday, brought another severe decline, followed by October 29, Black Tuesday, when the Dow fell even more. The prolonged collapse continued after those October sessions and contributed to the economic crisis later called the Great Depression. The common mistake is to treat October 29 as the entire crash rather than one day in a much longer market breakdown.
