During a quinceañera candle ceremony, 15 candles traditionally represent the celebrant’s years.
The candles correspond to the fifteen years commemorated by the celebration. In some versions of the ritual, the quinceañera lights the candles herself; in others, she gives them to important people in her life or names people associated with each candle.
The ceremony is symbolic rather than a universal requirement. Families may adapt it by choosing different recipients, readings, music, or meanings for the candles. Some modern celebrations use a large display or electronic candles instead.
The candle ritual should not be confused with the religious service that may accompany a quinceañera. A family may hold both a Mass or thanksgiving service and a separate reception ceremony, but neither format is identical everywhere.
