Discord was initially designed for which community?

The story behind the answer

Discord was initially designed for gamers. Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy launched Discord in 2015 as a low-latency voice, text, and video communication service built around multiplayer gaming. Its early appeal came from letting players coordinate during matches while keeping conversations available before and after a game.

The founders had already worked on social and gaming communication products: Citron created OpenFeint, while Vishnevskiy developed Guildwork. Their experience shaped Discord’s focus on reliable voice chat, persistent communities, and easy server creation. The service became especially popular among gaming groups that had previously used TeamSpeak, Mumble, or Skype.

Discord later expanded far beyond gaming. Study groups, hobby communities, creators, schools, and workplaces adopted servers for discussion and collaboration. That broader use can cause a common mix-up: Discord is now a general-purpose communication platform, but its original target community was gamers. Features such as game overlays, Rich Presence, and developer integrations also reflect that gaming-first origin.
