Playing center field for New York, Granderson struck out 195 times during the 2012 regular season. That total established a new single-season franchise record for a Yankees batter at the time, surpassing the mark he had set in 2011 with 169 strikeouts.

The record came during a productive but uneven season. Granderson played 160 games, hit 43 home runs, drove in 106 runs and scored 102 runs, but his batting average was .232. His combination of power and strikeouts reflected the all-or-nothing style common among many power hitters.

The record did not remain permanent. Aaron Judge later surpassed it by striking out 208 times in 2017, and Giancarlo Stanton also exceeded Granderson’s total with 211 strikeouts in 2018. Even so, Granderson’s 195 strikeouts remain an important entry in Yankees statistical history.
