Cripple Creek is located where?

The story behind the answer

Cripple Creek is located in Colorado, specifically in Teller County in the central part of the state. The historic city sits about 20 miles southwest of Colorado Springs near the base of Pikes Peak, at an elevation of roughly 9,500 feet.

Cripple Creek became famous during Colorado’s final major gold rush. Prospector Bob Womack discovered rich ore in 1890, and thousands of people soon moved into the high valley. The city was incorporated in 1892, and the surrounding district developed into a crowded network of mining towns, including Victor. By 1900, the district had about 500 mines.

Two major fires destroyed much of Cripple Creek in April 1896, after which the town was rebuilt largely with brick. Mining later declined, and the population fell sharply, but the community was never completely abandoned. Today, historic buildings, mine tours, the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad, and casino gambling draw visitors. The name can also refer to a nearby Colorado stream, so the question’s location is the state of Colorado.
