The Mazda Miata is known as the Mazda MX-5 in Australia.
Mazda introduced the lightweight two-seat roadster in 1989, drawing inspiration from classic British and Italian sports cars such as the Lotus Elan, MGB and Triumph Spitfire. Its design emphasized low weight, rear-wheel drive and responsive handling rather than high horsepower.
The car uses different names in different markets. Japan received it as the Eunos Roadster, North America commonly calls it the MX-5 Miata, and Australia uses Mazda MX-5. “Miata” is therefore not the Australian model name, although Australian enthusiasts may still use it informally when discussing the worldwide model.
The MX-5 has continued through four generations: NA, NB, NC and ND. More than one million have been sold, making it the best-selling two-seat convertible sports car in history.
