Brazil’s Independence Day commemorates the “Cry of Ipiranga” on which date?

The story behind the answer

Brazil’s Independence Day commemorates the “Cry of Ipiranga” on 7 September.

On that date in 1822, Prince Pedro declared Brazil’s independence from Portugal near the Ipiranga River in São Paulo. The event is traditionally associated with the cry “Independência ou Morte!”—“Independence or Death!”—although later national storytelling shaped the scene’s famous imagery.

Pedro became Emperor Pedro I of Brazil after independence. Unlike many independence struggles in Spanish America, Brazil’s transition retained a monarchy, which lasted until the proclamation of the republic in 1889.

Brazil marks the anniversary with military and civic parades, patriotic ceremonies, and cultural events. The São Paulo location remains especially important because it is linked to the symbolic declaration that separated Brazil from Portuguese rule.
