Brazilian legend Pelé played for the New York Cosmos in the 1970s.

Pelé joined the North American Soccer League's New York Cosmos in 1975, after an extraordinary career with Santos in Brazil and three World Cup victories with Brazil. His signing was one of the most important events in American soccer history, bringing unprecedented international attention to the league and the club.

He played for the Cosmos from 1975 through 1977. His final professional match came on October 1, 1977, at Giants Stadium, where he played one half for the Cosmos and one half for Santos in a ceremonial farewell. The Cosmos won the match 2–1.

The club was often called simply the Cosmos in 1977 and 1978, dropping "New York" from its name before restoring it in 1979. That temporary naming change can cause confusion, but the team was the same New York-based NASL outfit. Pelé's Cosmos teammates included major stars such as Franz Beckenbauer and Giorgio Chinaglia.
