Brandon Knight played which position during his rookie NBA season?

The story behind the answer

Brandon Knight played point guard during his rookie NBA season.

The Detroit Pistons selected Knight eighth overall in the 2011 NBA draft after his freshman season at Kentucky. He entered the league primarily as a point guard, responsible for bringing the ball up, organizing the offense, and creating opportunities for teammates. His ability to score also allowed him to spend some possessions at shooting guard.

Knight started 60 of Detroit's 66 games during the lockout-shortened 2011–12 season. He averaged 12.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game, numbers that helped earn him a place on the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He was the first Pistons rookie to receive that honor since Grant Hill in 1995.

Modern basketball often uses flexible backcourt labels, so Knight is sometimes listed as both a point guard and shooting guard in career biographies. That does not change the quiz answer: during his rookie campaign, his principal listed and functional position was point guard.
