Botswana shares its southern border with South Africa. The two countries meet along a boundary about 1,969 kilometres long, stretching from the Namibia tripoint in the west to the Zimbabwe tripoint in the east.

Much of the border follows rivers, including the Nossob, Molopo, Marico and Limpopo. Botswana’s capital, Gaborone, lies close to the South African border, making the relationship especially important for trade, travel and regional transport.

The border also passes through the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a large protected area jointly managed by Botswana and South Africa, with Namibia also connected at the park’s western corner. Important crossings include Ramatlabama and Pioneer Gate, part of the Trans-Kalahari Corridor.

A common mix-up is confusing Botswana’s southern neighbour with Namibia, which borders Botswana to the west, or Zimbabwe, which lies to the northeast. South Africa is the country directly south of Botswana.
