In Book 7 of The Dark Tower, Jake Chambers sacrifices himself to save Stephen King from the fatal car accident.
Roland Deschain and Jake travel to Maine in 1999 after realizing that King’s survival is essential to the continued existence of the story—and possibly the Dark Tower’s fate. They reach King as he walks near the road, but a Dodge minivan is already bearing down on him. Jake pushes King out of the vehicle’s path and is struck instead.
The moment carries special weight because Jake and Roland share a painful history. In The Gunslinger, Roland allowed Jake to fall to his death while pursuing the Man in Black. In The Dark Tower, Jake’s death reverses that earlier sacrifice: this time, he knowingly gives his life for Roland’s cause and for the writer whose work shapes their world. Before dying, Jake identifies Roland as his father, deepening the emotional impact of the scene.
A common mix-up is Father Callahan, who also dies in Book 7 while helping Jake and Oy escape the Dixie Pig. Eddie Dean dies earlier in the novel, during the assault on Algul Siento. Neither character is the one who saves Stephen King from the traffic accident.
