Between which two Indonesian islands is Krakatoa located?

Krakatoa is located between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, in the Sunda Strait.

The volcano sits above a highly active subduction zone where the Indo-Australian Plate moves beneath the Eurasian Plate. This tectonic setting helps explain why the strait contains numerous volcanoes and why Krakatoa has erupted so explosively.

Krakatoa’s catastrophic 1883 eruption destroyed much of the original island and generated tsunamis that killed more than 36,000 people. A new volcanic cone, Anak Krakatau, emerged from the caldera in 1927 and remains active.

A common mix-up is confusing Krakatoa with one of Indonesia’s many other volcanoes on Java or Sumatra. Krakatoa is not on either large island; it is an island volcano in the waterway separating them.
