Bastille Day is the national day of which country?

The story behind the answer

Bastille Day is the national day of France, celebrated annually on 14 July.

In France, the holiday is usually called la fête nationale or le 14 juillet rather than “Bastille Day,” an English-language name. Its date recalls the storming of the Bastille in Paris on 14 July 1789, a dramatic early event in the French Revolution.

The holiday also commemorates the Fête de la Fédération of 14 July 1790, a large celebration of national unity held one year after the Bastille fell. This dual meaning helped make the date acceptable to supporters of the French Republic.

Modern celebrations include the Bastille Day military parade on the Champs-Élysées, fireworks, concerts, public dances and gatherings. The holiday is therefore more than a prison’s capture: it represents revolution, citizenship and national unity.
