Bangladesh shares its largest land border with India.
Bangladesh and India share an international land boundary of about 4,096 kilometers, making it one of the world’s longest international borders. The boundary surrounds Bangladesh on much of its western, northern and eastern sides, while Bangladesh’s southeastern edge also meets Myanmar.
The modern border originated with the Radcliffe Line, drawn during the 1947 partition of British India. The line divided Bengal, leaving East Bengal as part of Pakistan; after Bangladesh’s independence in 1971, much of that same boundary became the border between Bangladesh and India.
The border passes alongside the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. It has included enclaves, disputed areas and heavily monitored crossings. A 2015 land-boundary agreement exchanged numerous enclaves and simplified several irregular sections, resolving one of the most unusual territorial problems in the region.
