At which university did Rembrandt van Rijn briefly enroll as a young man?

Rembrandt van Rijn briefly enrolled at Leiden University.

He was registered at the university in 1620, when he was about fourteen years old. The enrollment indicates that his family initially considered an academic education for him. Rembrandt did not pursue a long university career, however, and soon turned toward artistic training instead.

His early artistic development took place in Leiden. He studied with Jacob van Swanenburg and later worked with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam for a short period. Back in Leiden, he established himself as an independent painter and collaborated with Jan Lievens before relocating to Amsterdam around 1631.

The university enrollment is sometimes omitted from simplified biographies because Rembrandt’s artistic apprenticeship is much more important to his later career. It should not be interpreted as evidence that he graduated or completed a formal academic degree. Leiden University remained part of the city’s intellectual landscape while Rembrandt developed his independent artistic practice there.
