At which university did Niels Bohr earn his doctorate?

The story behind the answer

Niels Bohr earned his doctorate at the University of Copenhagen. He defended his doctoral thesis in physics there in 1911.

His dissertation, titled “Studies on the Electron Theory of Metals,” examined how electrons behave in metals using the physics available at the time. Bohr had already earned his master’s degree from the same university in 1909, after beginning his studies there in 1903. Copenhagen therefore played a central role in both his education and his early scientific development.

After completing the doctorate, Bohr traveled to England on a scholarship. He first worked with J. J. Thomson in Cambridge and then joined Ernest Rutherford in Manchester. Rutherford’s nuclear model strongly influenced Bohr’s later work on atomic structure.

Bohr eventually returned to Copenhagen and became a professor there. In 1921, the University of Copenhagen opened the Institute for Theoretical Physics under his leadership; it was later renamed the Niels Bohr Institute. His Copenhagen doctorate was the beginning of a career that led to the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics.
