At which seaside resort did Wickham earlier try to elope with Georgiana Darcy?

The story behind the answer

Wickham earlier tries to elope with Georgiana Darcy at Ramsgate in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Darcy explains the episode in his letter to Elizabeth Bennet. Georgiana, then about fifteen, was staying at Ramsgate with Mrs. Younge, her companion. Wickham exploited his childhood acquaintance with Georgiana, encouraged her belief that he loved her, and planned to elope with her for the sake of her substantial fortune.

Darcy discovered the scheme before the elopement could take place and intervened. The incident explains why Darcy regards Wickham as dangerous and why Georgiana is shy and distressed when Elizabeth later meets her. It also reveals that Wickham’s attractive manners conceal a pattern of manipulation and financial opportunism.

Ramsgate is not the place where Lydia’s elopement occurs: Lydia goes to Brighton and later runs away with Wickham. Lyme and Weymouth are separate seaside locations and are not the answer to this episode.
