At which Philadelphia landmark were the first commissioners sworn in for America250?

The story behind the answer

The first America250 commissioners were sworn in at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

The ceremony took place on November 16, 2018, when the newly formed United States Semiquincentennial Commission began its organizational work. Independence Hall was an especially symbolic venue because the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence there in 1776.

The landmark also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, which makes it relevant to both the Declaration and the Constitution. Congress chose the site to honor those linked episodes in American political history.

Independence Hall is sometimes confused with Congress Hall, another Philadelphia building associated with the early federal government. The Liberty Bell is also nearby and strongly associated with the same historic district, but the commissioners’ swearing-in ceremony took place at Independence Hall. The event began the commission’s planned eight-year effort leading to the 2026 semiquincentennial.
