At which Oxford college did C.S. Lewis teach and serve as a fellow?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis taught and served as a fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford. He was elected a fellow and tutor there in 1925 and remained associated with the college for many years.

Magdalen was an important setting in Lewis’s academic life. He taught English literature, worked with students, and developed the intellectual reputation that accompanied his scholarly books and public lectures. The college’s medieval buildings and grounds also became part of the landscape of his Oxford years.

Lewis later held the newly established chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University from 1954 until his death. That appointment did not erase his long Oxford connection, which is why Magdalen is the college most closely associated with his teaching career.

Readers sometimes name Christ Church or another famous Oxford college because Oxford has several historic institutions linked with prominent writers. Lewis’s documented fellowship, however, was at Magdalen College.
