At which Ohio flying field did the Wright brothers test the Flyer III?
Answer
Huffman Prairie
Answer
Huffman Prairie
The Wright brothers tested the Flyer III at Huffman Prairie in Ohio.
Huffman Prairie was a pasture northeast of Dayton near the railway community of Simms Station. The brothers began using the site in 1904 after returning from Kitty Hawk, and it became their principal testing ground for developing more capable airplanes.
The open field allowed repeated experiments without the logistical difficulties of transporting equipment to the North Carolina coast. With the Flyer III, the brothers developed dependable takeoffs, turns, circles, and landings. Their 1905 flights there were far longer and more controlled than the brief demonstrations of 1903.
Huffman Prairie is sometimes confused with Wright Field, the later military airfield named in honor of the brothers. Wright Field was established after their pioneering tests and is not the name of the pasture where the Flyer III was developed.
