At which New York art school did Georgia O'Keeffe study before becoming a major modernist?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe studied at the Art Students League of New York. She attended the school in 1907 and won a scholarship that allowed her to study with the influential painter William Merritt Chase.

The Art Students League offered flexible instruction outside the strict structure of traditional academies. O'Keeffe learned academic drawing and painting there, and Chase's teaching emphasized direct observation, composition, and the practice of working from a model or still life.

O'Keeffe later moved away from conventional realism as she explored abstraction and personal responses to nature. Her League training nevertheless gave her a strong technical foundation. The school had also taught many prominent American artists, including Thomas Eakins, Edward Hopper, and Norman Rockwell, making it an important part of the country's art-education history.
