At which military school did Fyodor Dostoevsky study engineering in Saint Petersburg?
Answer
Main Military Engineering School
Answer
Main Military Engineering School
Fyodor Dostoevsky studied engineering at the Main Military Engineering School in Saint Petersburg. His father sent him there after Dostoevsky’s mother died, and the institution trained military engineers for the Russian Empire.
Dostoevsky completed his studies in 1843 and entered government service as a draftsman in the Engineering Department. He soon found bureaucratic work unsatisfying and turned increasingly toward literature. His first published novel, Poor Folk, appeared in 1846 and brought him early recognition.
The school’s military setting is sometimes overlooked because Dostoevsky is remembered primarily as a novelist. His technical education nevertheless formed part of his early adult life before his arrest for involvement with the Petrashevsky Circle.
The institution later changed names and administrative status, so biographical sources may use related titles. Main Military Engineering School is the standard English name for the school he attended.
