In July 1944, Robinson boarded an Army bus with the wife of another officer. When the driver ordered him to move to the back, Robinson refused. The incident occurred despite Army regulations that prohibited segregation on military transportation. Military police arrested him, and he was charged with several offenses.

Robinson faced a general court-martial at Fort Hood in August 1944. He was acquitted of the charges, and the Army eventually honorably discharged him. His military experience became an important part of the story of his resistance to segregation before he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers.
