London's best-known New Year's Eve fireworks display is traditionally centered at the London Eye.
The display takes place along the River Thames, with fireworks launched from the London Eye, nearby barges, and other positions along the river. The Ferris wheel provides a highly recognizable centerpiece for live television coverage and views from central London.
The modern annual display began in its current large-scale form for the transition from 2004 to 2005. It is organized by the Mayor of London and has developed into one of the city's major public celebrations. Viewing areas and access rules can change, and some years use ticketed zones.
The display is often confused with Big Ben because the clock tower's chimes accompany the countdown. Big Ben is the bell inside the Elizabeth Tower; it is not the main fireworks launch site.
