At which Italian university did Copernicus study medicine after Bologna?
Answer
University of Padua
Answer
University of Padua
Copernicus studied medicine at the University of Padua after studying at Bologna.
He arrived at Padua in 1501 after receiving permission to continue his education. Padua was one of Europe’s leading medical centers, and Copernicus studied there from roughly autumn 1501 to summer 1503. His training was practical as well as scholarly, preparing him to serve as a medical adviser to church officials and members of the Warmia cathedral chapter.
Among the professors associated with his medical education were Bartolomeo da Montagnana, Girolamo Fracastoro, Gabriele Zerbi, and Alessandro Benedetti. He also acquired medical treatises that later became part of his working library. Medicine in the Renaissance was closely linked with astronomy and astrology, although evidence suggests Copernicus did not become an active practitioner of astrology.
His Padua years were not devoted only to medicine. He continued developing his astronomical interests and studied Greek and ancient scientific writings. During this period he briefly visited Ferrara to take the examinations for his 1503 doctorate in canon law. Thus Padua was the answer for his medical studies, while Ferrara was the place associated with his legal doctorate.
