The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational is traditionally held at Waimea Bay on Oahu, Hawaii.
The event honors Edward R. Ryan Aikau, a respected Hawaiian lifeguard and big-wave surfer who saved many lives at Waimea Bay. Aikau disappeared in 1978 while attempting to seek help after the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hokule'a capsized during a voyage.
The invitational is unusual because it runs only when waves reach the event's demanding size requirements. That waiting period is reflected in its well-known phrase, “The Bay Calls the Day.” When conditions are suitable, invited surfers compete in large waves at Waimea Bay rather than on a fixed annual date.
Waimea Bay is on Oahu's North Shore and is also historically important as one of the places where modern big-wave surfing developed. The event's location is therefore both a sporting venue and a direct connection to Aikau's lifeguarding career.
